Why can I hear some quiet environmental sounds but speech is hard to hear/understand?

Speech is made up of many complex sounds, whereas environmental sounds are usually one or two more simple sounds. The brain has to work harder to process speech sounds. If someone has hearing loss, it makes it a lot harder for the brain to process speech sounds as it’s missing some of the information, and sometimes it has to guess or try and fill in the gaps. Why do I hear my wife/husband/partner better than other people?

Sometimes family members talk louder than they normally would to try and help people to hear better. Otherwise, they may have to repeat what they’ve said, which can be tiring and frustrating. We also become more familiar with the people we talk to more regularly, learning how they talk, and what they’re likely to say.

Why do people find some sounds unbearably loud while others don't?

When people have inner ear hearing loss, they can find loud sounds louder than they actually are. This is called loudness recruitment. People with loudness recruitment have a reduced range of sound; soft sounds may be too soft to hear but loud sounds can be very loud and can even be painful. Loudness recruitment is treatable. Why does it sound like people are mumbling?

As we age, we lose our high-pitch hearing, which is the clarity of speech. People can sound less clear, and we can think that they are mumbling.
